    CLIMATE RIDE, THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

NYC to D.C. bike ride to fight climate change
Shawna Seldon, September 17, 2009 (for The Britta Climate Ride)

"While a bunch of moderate to conservative senators are grumbling about doing anything significant with climate legislation, 200 cyclists are willing to get on their bikes and go 300 miles to demonstrate a personal commitment to dealing with the climate challenge. It is a pretty stark contrast. Each Climate Ride-r has their own story about why they are willing to make that commitment. But instead we are stuck listening to Sen. Coal or Sen. Oil & Gas instead of them listening to the people. We’re all riding to change that…"

"This is it. The final countdown leading up to the Brita Climate Ride 2009, a 300-mile bicycle ride from New York City to Washington, D.C. to raise money to address climate change and promote renewable energy, which I decided to take on as my personal effort to confront climate change. I am riding on the Wind Power Pedalers team…Once I get [to D.C.]… I have meetings scheduled with my representatives in Congress, including Senator Gillibrand and Senator Schumer, to discuss my desire for them to support strong Climate Legislation.

"Last Friday, I finally reached the $2,400 goal to ride on Saturday, Sept. 26 …. But now the real test lies ahead: Will I make it the 60-ish miles a day from here (NYC) to DC from Saturday, Sept. 26-Wed., Sept. 30? And once I get down there, will I even be able to string together a sentence to my representatives in Congress about why *I* care about climate change legislation?"

"…[I]f you are in Washington DC, I invite you to join the Climate Riders as we pedal the final 4 miles of our 300 mile journey to the US Capitol. Show your support for Climate Riders and renewable energy legislation by riding with the Climate Ride peleton on Wednesday, September 30th. Riders will be gathering at Thompson Boat Center at 3:15pm for a 3:30 en masse departure to the US Capitol. You can also greet Climate Riders as we arrive at the US Capitol's West Lawn at 3:45pm, followed by a rally at 4pm. If you believe that the time is now to enact bold legislation on climate change and renewable energy, join us and make your voice heard!"
